Sales Engineer

 

Job Description:      

The Sales Engineer is a key member of the PA sales team and is responsible for day-to-day sales engineering functions.  This position provides technical sales support to both CLEC and ILEC sales groups and acts as the technical liaison between the sales team and the customer.  Primary support from this position is centered on Consolidated’s next generation Ethernet-based products (such as Metro Ethernet), but support for tradition TDM-based services is also needed.  The Sales Engineer also may work with Consolidated’s engineering groups and network technicians to develop and facilitate solutions for customers.

The projects encountered by the Sales Engineer are typically sales (i.e. customer) driven, and as such can vary in nature and scope.  Being the technical expert, the Sales Engineer must refine ambiguous customer requests into specific qualitative and quantitative specifications.  These job aspects give the Sales Engineer a rewarding opportunity to work on a variety of interesting projects, but they also require that the individual be very knowledgeable, creative, and thorough.  Also, being a customer-facing role, the Sales Engineer is oftentimes required to “sell” the customer on his or her ideas and proposals.  Important:  The Sale Engineer and the Sale Representative work as a team to win the customer’s business and further the relationship with the customer.

The Sales Engineer ‘s job functions include:

-Determine solutions that best meet the customer’s needs by leveraging Consolidated’s products, network, and abilities.

-Develop individual case basis (ICB) pricing for unique customer proposals.

-Support the sales and retention groups by providing technical knowledge and expertise.

-Serve as an integral part of interdepartmental groups and discussions to address market trends and growing customer needs.

-Internally provide customer feedback and aid in the improvement and development of Consolidated’s business customer products.

-Recognize and quickly address the needs of external business customers and internal customers (such as the sales team, engineering groups, product management, and technicians).

-Create presentation materials such as Visio diagrams, technical descriptions, Power Point documents, circuit route maps, and RFP responses.

-Post sales:  Work with engineering and design groups to ensure that the Sales Engineer’s preliminary plans and designs are properly interpreted and implemented.

-Post sales:  Work with Project Managers and Project Coordinators to ensure that the customer’s requirements (including delivery timeframe) are met.

         
Job Qualifications:      

Bachelor of Science in Engineering (preferred) or a comparable combination of education, training, and experience.

5 -7 years experience in sales engineering, network engineering, systems design, or similar.

CCNA certification (or the ability to obtain) is preferred.

Experience with LAN/WAN technologies and architectures, specifically switching and routing.

Good interpersonal skills and a positive demeanor - this is a customer-facing position.

Knowledge of last-mile connectivity options and methodology in a CLEC environment.

Knowledge of next-generation technologies such as Ethernet, MPLS, IP, VoIP, VPLS, QoS, RSTP.

Knowledge of TDM technologies such as SONET, OC-x, DS-3, T-1, POTS.

Knowledge of the OSI model with specific concentration on Layer 2 and Layer 3.

Knowledge of fiber network configurations, dark fiber, DWDM, and redundancy versus diversity.

Knowledge of Internet connectivity options and autonomous systems.

Must be able to respond and adapt to the demands of a fast-paced highly technical environment while managing multiple projects and responsibilities.

Must have ability to work independently with limited supervision and possess strong organizational and time-management skills.

Must have excellent presentation skills (verbal and written) and be able to instill confidence in the customer and oftentimes the customer’s IT group.
