Consolidated Communications employees donate shoes to Lufkin schools

LUFKIN – Consolidated Communications employees are hoping a donation of new shoes will help make a great school year for many students. The company’s Spirit Team recently presented more than 50 pairs of shoes to the Lufkin Independent School District for students.

Tonja Akridge, a social worker with the Lufkin ISD, said the shoes will be used throughout the school year to assist students in need. "We all remember as children how good we felt about ourselves when we had new shoes that fit. That self confidence flows over into success in the classroom as well," she said. "Community support and involvement are so important to the success of our students. Consolidated Communications definitely has shown its involvement and interest in the success of our students by donating these shoes."

To raise money for the donation, the Consolidated Communications Spirit Team hosted an employee breakfast and asked for donations of new shoes. A raffle also helped the group raise more than $350 to purchase additional shoes.

Beckie Coleman, president of the Spirit Team, thanked the Lufkin employees who helped make the shoe drive a success through shoe donations or monetary donations. "We have collected school supplies in the past, but this year we wanted to do something a little more personal for the students," she said. "I am so pleased we will be able to help students with this donation."

Consolidated Communications’ Spirit Teams host quarterly events for employees and are dedicated to supporting community efforts and encouraging fellowship among employees.
