Consolidated Communications sponsors recycling drive at Effingham schools
MATTOON – Consolidated Communications has partnered with three Effingham schools to help reduce waste going to landfills by recycling old phone books. The program begins September 8 and coincides with the distribution of the 2008-2009 Phone Book from Consolidated Communications for Effingham and the surrounding area.
Children who attend St. Anthony Grade School, Sacred Heart School and Effingham Junior High School are being asked to bring in old phone books gathered from family members and friends. All three schools will earn cash prizes ranging from $500 to $1,000 for their efforts based on the number of books recycled in each location and the number of students enrolled in the school.
Sanitation Service Inc., of Effingham, "The Rubbish Gobbler," is also supporting the effort by gathering and housing recycled books. The recycling drive will end Oct. 10. Area residents can also recycle their old phone books by dropping them off at Consolidated’s Effingham Communication Center 1301 W. Evergreen.
Brad Barker of Consolidated Directory Services, said the goal of the program this year is to gather more than 18,000 old directories during the month-long collection period. "We’re excited to offer this program again in Effingham. The response from students last year was overwhelming, and they brought in more than 17,700 old directories," he said.
