1 Gig FAQs

What is 1 Gig or 1 gigabit?

One gigabit per second (Gbps) is a 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps) connection. One Gbps may be referred to as 1,000 Mbps, 1G, 1 Gig or 1 Gbps.

What does 1 Gig actually correspond to in real life usage? For example, how many web pages, emails or videos is this?

It’s hard to give exact figures – for example every web page differs in size depending on the amount of text, images and other multimedia content within it. Also, while most email messages are small in size, they can also be fairly large if they include attachments such as photos. In the following table, we’ve taken “typical” usage and provided a number of “What (how many X) can be done (downloaded) in approximately 1 second.”

Basic webpage downloads (mainly text)

1,250

Rich webpage downloads (with multimedia)

375

Basic email downloads

125,000

Rich email downloads (with attachments)

250

Music song downloads

25

Video (HD) streams

Why do I need that much speed for my Internet connection?

Today the average consumer has multiple devices tied to one Internet connection in his/her home. These devices can be TVs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, printers, home security systems or game consoles. The more devices connected to your Internet connection, the more overall speed you need to support them.
1 Gig service gives you the freedom to:

  • Use multiple devices at once without sacrificing speed
  • Stream movies, download videos and upload photos with virtually no buffering or waiting
  • Play games online knowing you have the fastest Internet speed available
  • Work from home with the greatest efficiency and reliability you can get from a home Internet connection

What type of technology do you use to deliver 1 Gig service to my house?

Consolidated Communications will deliver 1 Gig speed to your home through fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. This means we are delivering your Internet service via an optical fiber from our service equipment location directly to the optical network terminal box on the outside of your home. The use of optical fiber enables higher Internet speeds than other forms of communication, such as copper wire, that drastically reduce bandwidth.

Who owns and operates the 1 Gig network?

Consolidated Communications delivers 1 Gig service via their own fiber optic network = CCI fiber+

What happens during the installation?

A fiber-to-the-home installation has two parts. We already have our fiber-to-the-home network installed in your neighborhood. The first part is to prepare for the installation by extending the fiber from the street to the side of your house. This preparation work happens a few days before the actual installation date.

The second part takes place on your actual installation date. Your installation technician will explain what he/she will do to get your service up and running. The main priority is to establish the best location inside your home for the Ethernet cable outlet and router. Once this is complete, our technician will go over the details of your new service. This whole process takes about four hours.

Do I need to be home for the installation?

We do require that an adult over 18 years of age be at home for the service installation since we need to access the interior of your home. This person needs to be able to make decisions regarding placement of the cable outlet, the router and anything else related to customizing your installation process.

How do I get the most out of my 1 Gig service? Do I need to buy new devices?

The weak link in the chain to receiving the fastest Internet speed is most commonly the device being used, which could be a laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc. More recently purchased devices can support faster Internet speeds than older devices. You will need to check the documentation for your specific devices to find out their maximum speeds. Newer laptops outfitted with a 1000BaseT network interface card may support up to 1 Gig speeds. However, most smartphones and tablets are limited to speeds well below 1 Gig.

The next consideration is whether or not your device is plugged directly into the router via an Ethernet cable versus using Wifi service. A direct connection via Ethernet cable is the best way to experience your device's full speed. If you connect via Wifi, your speed may decrease since wireless connections are inherently slower. Wireless connections can also be adversely affected by extreme distance versus close proximity to the router as well as the number of walls or other obstacles between your device and the router.

Another consideration is the wiring that distributes communication services throughout your home, commonly known as "inside wiring." Modern homes usually come equipped with inside wiring that is more likely to support 1 Gig. Older homes are more likely to experience some loss in speed due to out-of-date inside wiring standards in place when those home were constructed. Cat 5e or Cat 6 cabling is the industry-standard cabling used for 1 Gig speeds. Cat 5 and below may only be able to achieve 100 Mbps speeds.

A final consideration is the Internet itself. Most common Internet destinations do not serve content to users at 1 Gig speeds. Even though you have 1 Gig service and you have wired your brand new computer directly into your new router to be able to download at 1 Gig, you still cannot download any faster than the server to which you are connected can serve.

What is the maximum speed I can expect when using various devices (e.g. laptop, smartphone, tablets)?

Each device has its own maximum speed capacity. Check your device's manual for the answer. For wireless devices, please check your device documentation for the "max sync rate." This is the maximum speed your device is capable of running, excluding any other factor that my impact speed capabilities.

Do I need additional equipment?

When we install your new Internet service we will activate an Ethernet port that will connect to our router if you subscribe to our home networking service. Or you can connect your own router if you prefer.

Will I need a modem?

You do not need a modem. Since we are using fiber-to-the-home technology, the only equipment you need is a router.

Will I be able to use Wifi with 1 Gig?

Yes. The equipment we will provide is designed to give you Internet access throughout your home, either through the wired connection or Wifi.

Will my Wifi connection be as fast as a wired connection?

Wifi connections are slower than wired connections. The routers we install with our 1 Gig Internet are the best available and will optimize your Wifi connections and minimize any speed degradation.

Testimonials

What Customers are saying:

"I don't have to think twice about uploading or downloading a file. No more inconvenient waiting on the Internet."

"Extremely low latency makes everything faster. The ability to download new games and game updates instantly is highly desired."

"Most file downloads are a lot faster and streaming is better. Hard to "test" the speed with the given test sites. Ping times are somewhat faster but they were pretty low numbers to start with. This is more of a trial to see how much of a difference it really makes."

"I'm no longer waiting or planning around various activities. My download/upload speeds are fast enough where I can do more activities over the Internet instead of relying on physical media for data transport."

"I download and upload multiple DVD and VM images a day. I can do it significantly faster now."

"Windows updates download much faster, Netflix starts immediately, uploading content is much faster. I can pull from my home server when I’m out and it’s very fast."
