Internet Configuration with Wired/Wireless Set-Up and Security for Comtrend Modems

 

Before you begin setting up your Consolidated Communications Internet account, please have your Internet Access Information sheet in front of you. Please contact our Internet Help Desk if you have any questions.

Wired Configuration for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8

(Port 3 & 4 on your wireless modem/router are disabled is not for internet use.)

Step/Action:

1. Click on Internet Explorer or Firefox . Instead of your normal home page you should see the Consolidated Communications log in screen seen in step 2.

2. Enter the High-Speed Internet User name and password found on your Internet Access Information Sheet.

- Click the Connect button. If this is done successfully, you will see a congratulations screen.

3. Close the Congratulations screen and unplug the power to the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router. After 20 seconds, plug the power back into the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router. Then restart your computer.
4. Once the ADSL or VDSL light is solid, the High-Speed Internet will be connected again. This should take about 2 minutes.

Wired Configuration for Macintosh OS 8 and up

(Port 3 & 4 on your wireless modem/router are disabled and not for Internet use.)

Step/Action:

1. Click on the Apple Menu, and scroll to Location or System Preferences. Click on Network Preferences.

2. Select Automatic in the Location box.

- Select Built-in Ethernet in the Show box.
- Now Click on the TCP/IP tab.
- Select Using DHCP in the Configure box. Clear the DNS Servers, and Search Domains boxes.
- Click the Save button and save the changes.

3. Click on Firefox , Safari , or Internet Explorer . Instead of your normal home page you should see the Consolidated Communications log in screen seen in step 4.

4. Enter the High-Speed Internet User name and password found on your Internet Access Information Sheet.

- Click the Connect button. If this is done successfully, you will see a congratulations screen.

5. Close the Congratulations screen and unplug the power to the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router. After 20 seconds, plug the power back into the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router. Then restart your computer.
6. Once the ADSL or VDSL light is solid, the High-Speed Internet will be connected again. This should take about 2 minutes.

Wireless Security for the Comtrend Modem/Router

(Port 3 & 4 on your wireless modem/router are disabled and not for Internet use.)

*Warning: Follow these instructions on a Computer that is WIRED to the High-Speed Internet Router. Do NOT follow these on any wireless computers. You must first set up the wireless security before you ca Connect wirelessly.

Step/Action:

1. Click on Firefox , Safari , or Internet Explorer .

2. In the Address or Location bar type http://192.168.1.1 and click the Go button or hit the Enter key on your keyboard.

3. After clicking the Go button/Enter key, you will be prompted for a username and password. Please type the word root for the username and 12345 for the password and click OK.

4. Using the menu system on the left, click on Wireless to expand the menu.

- Then select Basic. Put a check next to Enable Wireless.
- For the SSID type a name for your wireless network and write it down for your reference later.
- Click the Save/Apply button when done.

5. Using the menu system on the left, select Security.

You should now see a similar page to the picture below. In the next step we will be changing the selection box next to Network Authentication to WPA-PSK.

6. To use WPA-PSK:

-Change the Network Authentication to WPA-PSK.
-For the WPA Pre-Shared Key enter in a password that you will remember and write it down for your reference later.
**If you select WPA2-PSK you may have issues connecting your Apple, wii, PS3 devices and other devices.
-Click the Save/Apply button.

7. After setting up your wireless security you will need to connect your wireless device by browsing the available wireless networks.

*(If you used your laptop/wifi device to configure the wireless then disconnect the Ethernet/network cable before connecting to the wifi connection.)

Connecting to Wireless Network for Windows 7

 

1. In the bottom right corner of your screen near the clock you will see an icon that looks like a computer or this Click on this icon once with the left mouse button to pop up a list of available wireless networks.

 

2. In the list of available wireless networks that popped up, select your wireless network. Click the Connect button.

3. In the text box labeled Security key, type the pass-phrase(password) that you configured the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router with.

- Click the OK button.

4. In the confirmation window be sure that there are check marks next to the options for Save this network and Start this connection automatically.

- Click the Close button.
*If you get a prompt for why type of network you are connecting to you will be given 3 options, Home, Work and Public. A typical user can select either Work or Public.

5. After a minute or so your computer should connect to the wireless network. If for some reason it does not connect you may want to try to connect again making sure you are using the correct password. You can also try restarting your computer.

- You can now open Internet Explorer or Firefox and you should be on the Internet.
- Please repeat these steps for all Windows 7 computers you want connected wirelessly.

Connecting to Wireless Network for Windows Vista

 

1. Click on the Start button and select Connect To.

 

2.In the Connect to a Network window, select your wireless network.

- Click the Connect button in the bottom right corner of the window.

3. In the text box labeled Security key, type the pass-phrase(password) that you configured the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router with.

- Click the OK button.

4. In the confirmation window be sure that there are check marks next to the options for Save this network and Start this connection automatically.

- Click the Close button.

Connecting to Wireless Network for Windows XP

 

1. In the bottom right corner of your screen, near the clock, you will see an icon that looks like this . Right click on this and select View available wireless networks

 

2. In the Wireless Network Connection window, select your wireless network.

Click the Connect button in the bottom right corner of the window.

3. In the text box labeled Security key, type the pass-phrase(password) you configured the High-Speed Internet Modem/Router with.

- Click the OK button.
- When it has connected you may close the wireless network list window.

4. After a minute or so your computer should connect to the wireless network. If for some reason it does not connect you may want to try to connect again making sure you are using the correct password. You can also try restarting your computer.

- You can now open Internet Explorer or Firefox and you should be on the Internet.
- Please repeat these steps for all Windows XP computers you want connected wirelessly.

What do the lights on my CT-5372 High-Speed Internet Router mean?

(Black/Grey Comtrend)

Power LED:

Solid Green - The High-Speed Internet Router is on, and its self-test has completed.
Solid Red - If this is red for longer then 20 seconds the self-test has failed and the modem has malfunctioned.
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is not powered on. (Check to make sure the power cord is plugged into a working power outlet)

Alarm LED:

Solid Red - The ADSL/VDSL is not connected yet. (Check to make sure the phone cord is plugged in)

LAN LED:

1 & 2 (Internet ONLY)

Solid Green - A computer or Ethernet device is connected and its network card is on.
Flashing Green - The computer or Ethernet device connected has activity; data travel.
Off - No computer or Ethernet device is plugged in or its network card is off.

3& 4 (TV ONLY)

Solid Green - A IPTV Set-top Box is connected and is on.
Flashing Green - The IPTV Set-top Box connected has activity; data travel.
Off - No IPTV Set-top Box is plugged in or its network card is off.

ADSL/VDSL LED:

Solid Green - The High-Speed Internet Router has connected with Consolidated Communications.
Flashing Green - The High-Speed Internet Router is connecting with Consolidated Communications. (Internet will not work yet)
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is off

Wireless LED:

Solid Green - The wireless is on.
Flashing Green - There is activity across the wireless signal.
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is off or the wireless is not turned on.

*If the High-Speed Internet modem/router CT-5372 has a colored circle sticker on it, Then you should be able to use all 4 ports for internet [1-4])

What do the lights on my CT-5374 High-Speed Internet Router mean?

(White Comtrend)

Internet LED:

Solid Green - The High-Speed Internet Router has connection to the Internet.
Flashing Green - IP connected and IP Traffic is passing thru the device (either direction)
Solid Red - The High-Speed Internet Router is trying to connect to the Internet.
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is not connected to the Internet, or is set up as a modem only connection. (typically means you have your own router)

Power LED:

Solid Green - The High-Speed Internet Router is on, and its self-test has completed.

ETH LED:

1 & 2 (Internet ONLY)

Solid Green - A IPTV Set-top Box is connected and is on.

Off - No IPTV Set-top Box is plugged in or its network card is off.

Wireless LED:

Solid Green - The wireless is on.
Flashing Green - There is activity across the wireless signal.
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is off or the wireless is not turned on.

A/V DSL LED:

Solid Green - The High-Speed Internet Router has connected with Consolidated Communications.
Flashing Green - The High-Speed Internet Router is connecting with Consolidated Communications. (Internet will not work yet)
Off - The High-Speed Internet Router is off.
