Consolidated's Pioneer Club Awards $3,000 in Scholarships

June 21, 2012 - Three students recently received scholarships totaling $3,000 from the Iverson A. Lumpkin Pioneer Club during a reception held at Consolidated Communications. 

The Mattoon-based chapter of the Pioneer Club is part of the national Telecommunications Pioneers organization and includes employees and retirees of Consolidated Communications. Since 1990, the club has awarded more than $106,600 in scholarships to 159 students. 

Applicants must be a child, grandchild or great-grandchild of a club member, have a 3.0 GPA and be enrolling in a two or four-year accredited college to be eligible for the scholarship. 

The 2012 recipients of the Iverson A. Lumpkin Pioneer Club scholarship include:

  • Kayla Myers of Mattoon. She is the daughter of John and Robin Myers and will be attending Eastern Illinois University in the fall. She is a 2012 graduate of Mattoon High School, and  was sponsored by her grandfather, Al Walters of Mattoon.
  • Brooke  O’Hara of Tuscola. She is a 2012 graduate of Atwood-Hammond High School. She plans to attend Parkland College. She is the daughter of Kelly and Mary Beth O’Hara, and was sponsored by her mother.
  • Austin Saunders of Sullivan. Austin will be attending Arizona State University as a sophomore this fall. He is the son of David Saunders of Canton, Ohio, and he was sponsored by his great-grandmother Lucille Saunders of Mattoon. He is a graduate of Sullivan High School.
