Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island get new fiber internet network from Fidium Fiber

Fidium Fiber is now available to every home and business in previously unserved communities

PORTLAND, Maine — Jan. 10, 2024 — Fidium Fiber, an all-new multi-gigabit fiber internet service is now available on Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island, with all homes and businesses in the previously unserved communities now able to access the service. With this expansion, residents can now experience the benefits that come with access to high-speed fiber connection, and will provide a lasting impact for the community.

“Our island has historically been dominated by summer residents”, said Matt Hoffner of the Great and Little Diamond Islands Fiber Committee. “Visitors or homeowners who wanted to stay longer or become year-round residents were often limited by the lack of reliable and high-speed internet. Our island fiber committee worked with Consolidated Communications and the Maine Connectivity Authority to get a grant that has allowed fiber to be run to both islands. We expect the long-term impact of creating a larger and sustainable year-round community will be profound. We very much appreciate the support we received from both organizations.”

The new Fidium Fiber network on Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island was built out by Consolidated Communications and funded in part by a grant from the Maine Connectivity Authority (MCA).

"Connecting Maine's islands is vastly important to MCA's goal, and construction on these islands is no easy task,” said Tyler Collins, infrastructure grant manager at Maine Connectivity Authority. “MCA is grateful for Consolidated’s work to bring true broadband service to Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island. We look forward to continuing this partnership and are excited about future projects to bring critical internet service to all areas of Maine."

With the addition of Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island, more than 250,000 Maine homes and businesses now have access to Fidium Fiber, an increase of 45% in the last year.

“Bringing fiber to Great Diamond Island and Little Diamond Island is an investment in the future of this community, providing this and future generations with the connectivity that will serve them for years to come,” said Sarah Davis, vice president of market development for Consolidated Communications. “We are excited to bring Fidium Fiber to the community, connecting residents and businesses to better educational opportunities, a host of economic benefits, entertainment options and more community connection.”
