Volunteer Registration Open for Special Olympics Family Festival

Join the excitement as a volunteer at SOFF 2016 on Saturday, Sept. 17

July 29, 2016Consolidated Communications is looking for volunteers to help make the 33rd Annual Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF) a day to remember for approximately 700 Special Olympics Athletes this September. General event volunteers and Friend-For-A-Day volunteers are needed for the festival on Saturday, Sept. 17, on the grounds of Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.

SOFF volunteers will help serve food, work in game areas, award prizes and assist with registration and other activities. One of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities at SOFF is serving as a Friend-For-A-Day, where a volunteer is paired with an Athlete to escort them through the various activity and events.

“This year’s event will feature a circus theme, ‘The Greatest SOFF on Earth,’ and we anticipate it will be very popular with the Athletes. We have a great day planned for our Athletes and volunteers, and we are excited to have performers with the Illinois State University’s Gamma Phi Circus scheduled to share their talents at SOFF this year,” said Dan Romack, 2016 SOFF Committee Chairman said.  “The Athletes and our past volunteers know SOFF really is a one-of-a-kind event, and we’re looking forward to making this another unforgettable day.”

Unlike traditional Special Olympic events, SOFF is a non-competitive day centered on games and activities in a carnival-type atmosphere for pre-registered Special Olympic Athletes from Illinois Regions 8, 9, 10 and 17. SOFF begins with an opening ceremony and parade and continues with games and activities throughout the day including: a softball throw, basketball shoot, dunk tank, ring toss and bowling.

SOFF is a non-smoking event and is not open to the public. All SOFF volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and must sign up as a volunteer prior to the event.  Volunteer registration is available online at www.consolidated.com/SOFFVolunteer where you can sign up as a Friend-For-A-Day or general event volunteer. Learn more about the event on our Special Olympics Family Festival Facebook page or watch our video. Call 800.434.SOFF if you have questions.

SOFF was founded by Consolidated Communications in 1984, and is organized by its employees along with partners from Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center and First Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust.
