Volunteers Needed for Special Olympics Family Festival

Unique Friend-For-A-Day volunteer opportunity available at annual festival Sept. 23

MATTOON, Ill. – September 18, 2017Consolidated Communications is looking for volunteers to serve as Friends-For-A-Day at the Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF) on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on the grounds of Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill.

SOFF is a day of non-competitive fun, games and activities for approximately 700 Special Olympics Athletes from central Illinois. The greatest need remains for Friend-For-A-Day volunteers to be paired with Athletes.

“The volunteer position of Friend-For-A-Day is a unique and rewarding experience at SOFF,” said Angelo Rosa, chairperson of 2017 SOFF. At the beginning of the day each Athlete is assigned a Friend to escort them through the tent city at Lake Land College. All activities at SOFF are free for both the Athlete and Friend and there is plenty to do,” explained Rosa. “The day kicks off with our energizing opening ceremony and parade, and continues with games, activities and performances until about 2 p.m.”

Learn more about being a Friend-For-A-Day by watching a video posted at www.consolidated.com/soff.

“I encourage anyone considering volunteering at SOFF to take a few minutes to watch the video,” said Rosa. “You’ll get a small glimpse into the SOFF event and the unforgettable day it is for the athletes and the volunteers.”

SOFF is a non-smoking/vaping event and is not open to the public. All SOFF volunteers must be 15 years of age or older to work as a general volunteer and must be 16 years of age or older to be a Friend-For-A-Day.  Volunteers must sign up prior to the event online at www.consolidated.com/SOFFVolunteer.
